Can you remember 5 October 1989? (If you are too young, just look it up on the Internet.) A historic date? Most definitely, but not in terms of global politics: the Berlin Wall did not come down until a month later.
The date, 5 October 1989, marks the first “long Thursday” in the German retail sector. Almost a revolution, as stores were allowed to remain open two hours longer – to 8:30 p.m. instead of 6:30 p.m. But note, Thursdays only, and the standard closing time on Saturdays remained 2 p.m.

Thanks to the Internet, digitalisation and liberalised opening hours, we in retail and tourism can now be part of your world at any time and at any place. We have noted that the online channel is becoming increasingly important for shopping and services. At the same time, we see strong interest among customers of all ages in exploring and using products and services provided by our stores and travel agencies. For this reason, we are integrating both into a comprehensive omnichannel strategy and are also developing new business models for the future of shopping and travel. We get the message: it is not channels, but only customer wishes that matter!

No doubt about it: digitalisation of the business world poses major challenges for our Group.
