When we began to develop the concept for REWE Group’s Annual Report seven months ago, nobody could have imagined how proximity regulations and social distancing would soon become such an important part of our lives. Today, during the summer of 2020, we know that keeping distance was and is the critical factor in the safety and health of people during the coronavirus crisis. The title of our Annual Report, “At your side ”, expresses how closely our business – both in retail and tourism – is interwoven into the lives of people in Germany and in our other European markets. No matter whether you are talking about food or travel, DIY needs or drug store items: The products and services offered by the companies of REWE Group are a part of your world almost every day. And we work diligently and passionately to provide our customers, retailers and employees with the very best service at all times. Even when closeness involves maintaining a certain distance.

The coronavirus crisis of spring 2020 has raised many questions and changed many things. One aspect stands out above all: The provision of food to people is not only a business that is shaped by customer focus and product expertise, but is also – as people are now saying – a system-relevant enterprise on which people can rely so that life can go on. I would like to express my utmost gratitude to the hundreds of thousands of REWE Group employees throughout Germany and Europe, individuals who worked at their very limits during the crisis. They have earned my highest respect.

This situation has also demonstrated just how fundamental people’s need for travel and recreation is. I am confident that DER Touristik Group, the second largest travel company in Europe, will soon be able to fulfil the travel dreams of its millions and millions of customers once again, by providing trips with the same level of service and security as before, featuring a wide variety of attractive opportunities.

In business terms, the 2019 business year was another successful one for REWE Group with growth in both revenue and earnings. Today, we know that these results serve as an important contribution that will enable us to confidently overcome the challenges of 2020 that our cooperative group faces and to emerge securely positioned and on sound financial footing.

In the magazine section of our Annual Report, you will once again find lively examples of REWE Group’s diversity and capabilities. Our goal remains to be closer to people, our customers, their wishes and needs – even in the age of distance.
