2020 was an event-filled year at the REWE Group. The coronavirus frequently shaped the company’s everyday operations. In spite of it all, we remained committed to our strategic focus and determinedly move ahead. This determination was reflected in a large number of projects and initiatives beyond our daily activities driven by the coronavirus.
The merger of the REWE Group and the Lekkerland Group resulted in the creation of a new business area called Convenience under the umbrella of the REWE Group | The REWE Group was certified once again as a Top Employer by the Top Employers Institute for its exceptional focus on staff | REWE concluded local partnerships to underscore its commitment to the protection, preservation and promotion of local producers | The REWE Group tested an innovative coating process for selected fruits that is designed to extend their shelf lives | In 2020, BILLA Bulgaria provided BGN 86,000 in funds for the CSR project “We love Bulgaria” | In the Netherlands, Lekkerland launched initiatives for sustainable logistics with a focus on hydrogen, recycling services and smart refrigeration systems | DER Touristik Hotels & Resorts acquired Galo Resort on Madeira – the second property owned by the DER Touristik.
DER Touristik Group complemented its operations around the Mediterranean with a new destination agency in Cyprus | BILLA Russia supported “Yellow Sack Helps Children”, a fund-raising project that helps youngsters obtain medical care.
Coronavirus pandemic: The DER Touristik carried out the largest return programme in the company’s history and brought 44,000 package-tour guests back home safely | The market hall concept was rolled out nationally by PENNY Germany. About 350 stores are scheduled to be remodelled in 2021 as part of the programme | REWE donated 600,000 euros for development projects in Central America | toom Baumarkt DIY stores received the industry award “Best of Eco” from the German Association of DIY and Gardening Stores for its comprehensive commitment to sustainability | REWE Lieferservice significantly expanded its capacities | Contribution to the environment: BILLA Czech Republic produced durable shopping bags from 15 tons of plastic fished from the seas | PENNY Italy launched a campaign to express its commitment to the Italian economy: “Abbracciamo l’impresa italiana” (Embracing Italy).
REWE Group plans to quintuple its offerings of eggs that are produced in a programme that ended the culling of male chicks | BILLA Austria increased the number of its Click&Collect stores – the BILLA online shop expanded its product range and extended its delivery hours | PENNY Czech Republic supported Czech suppliers, local producers and Czech products with “Proudly Nicely the Czech Way” | DER Touristik merged the hotel brands lti and Sentido. The implementation is being carried out step by step.
REWE’s pick-up service is now available at more than 1,000 stores. During the coronavirus pandemic, about 500 pick-up stations were set up in the shortest amount of time possible | The Weinfreunde online shop celebrated its fifth anniversary | DER Touristik helped hotel partners around the world with their reopening activities following the coronavirus lockdown by providing them with a detailed prevention concept | Conway opened a new logistics centre in Courcelles, Belgium | Czech antitrust authorities approved the acquisition of the Czech company Fischer by the DER Touristik | BILLA Austria launched a regionality offensive called “Land voller Leben” (Country Full of Life) and is selling only fresh meat and poultry that are produced in Austria at more than 1,100 stores and in its online shop.

REWE has largely foregone the use of packaging for its organic fruit and vegetables | Compassion week at nahkauf: Campaigns helped disadvantaged families get through the coronavirus crisis | PENNY began to sell organic heroes without packaging or in plastic-free packaging | The new PENNY logistics centre in Kronau went into operation | New climate goal: REWE Group intends to cut the greenhouse gas emissions in its store-brand supply chain by 15 per cent by 2030 | DER Reisebüro acquired 25 Galeria travel agencies and added about 100 employees in the process | REWE Lieferservice: expansion and opening of another warehouse location in Berlin | Change in leadership at the DER Touristik Group in Eastern Europe – Jiri Jelinek became CEO DER Touristik Eastern Europe.
In Berlin, PENNY opened its first sustainability store with 20 interactive stations | REWE Group donated 450,000 euros for the coronavirus relief fund set up by the Tafeln food banks. The money comprised funds raised during campaigns organised by REWE, PENNY and toom Baumarkt DIY stores as well as money and product donations from the companies and participation in the mask campaign “Teamplayer” | REWE became an association member of Demeter, an organic agriculture organisation | PENNY launched “Food for Future”, its first vegan store brand that extends across product groups | toom Baumarkt DIY stores supported the live charity event “YouTopia” and donated trees through the programme “Plant for the Planet” | Lekkerland announced high investments in a logistics network of the future | REWE digital established OC fulfillment GmbH with an independent platform “fulfillmenttools” for omnichannel software solutions | BILLA Bulgaria relaunched the BILLA Card.
