2018 was one of the best business years in the history of our company. The year’s major achievements included developments in e-commerce and omnichannel activities, introduction and implementation of new store concepts, and modernisation of the company’s stationary business inside and outside Germany.

January

REWE Group certified as top employer

For the fourth straight year, REWE Group was recognised for its exceptional commitment to its workforce with a certification as Top Employer Germany 2018 by the Top Employers Institute. Before receiving the award, the group successfully completed a six-step certification programme. As part of this, employee benefits were evaluated and audited.

REWE Group in Austria launches e-commerce training

With a new training programme for e-commerce specialists and for application development/coding, REWE Group in Austria is training workers in omnichannel retail and digitalisation.

MERKUR expands further in 2018

With an investment volume of about 50 million euros, MERKUR continued to expand in 2018 and renovated six stores. It also opened six new stores.

PENNY Austria expands its range of fresh products

In response to growing demand for freshly baked goods, PENNY launched its “Brot & Gebäck-Offensive” (bread & baked goods offensive): new baked specialities were added to the product range and, by the end of 2018, new small baked goods dispensers had been installed in 150 stores in Austria. The range of fruit and vegetables is also being constantly expanded in stores.

REWE Group issues promissory note

REWE Group took advantage of generally favourable conditions in the financial markets to strengthen its strategic financial reserves through the successful placement of a promissory note. The final volume of the transaction totalled 1 billion euros.

REWE package service takes off

The REWE package service was launched across Germany in February 2018. About 40 selected partners have now been added to REWE’s online shop, broadening the variety of food and non-food products. This gives customers even greater choice.

REWE Group plans to significantly expand its logistics capacities

With an investment of about 600 million euros in the next four years, the company is planning for seven new logistics centres in the next eight years. In doing so, REWE Group is responding to the dynamic growth of the food retail business, which is generating a need for additional warehouse capacity across Germany.

Kuoni France joins DER Touristik Group

DER Touristik Group, the Travel and Tourism division of REWE Group, entered the French market in March 2018 with its acquisition of the French company Travel Lab SAS, better known as Kuoni France. The acquisition brings further growth to the group consisting of tour operator Kuoni France and six other providers of exclusive travel opportunities.

Flagship store of BILLA Slovakia redesigned

In March, the new BILLA flagship store reopened in Bratislava in a completely new look. The new store features innovative sales concepts. The fresh food range is presented in a larger sales area, offering customers a new and pleasant shopping experience.

IKI opens environmentally-friendly store in Lithuania

IKI opened the first shopping centre in Lithuania to be awarded the highest BREEAM performance rating. The shopping centre uses renewable technologies such as geothermal energy, a green roof for insulation and a rainwater filter. The IKI supermarket has 1,600 square metres of space and is equipped with such green solutions as environmentally aware cooling systems that include refrigeration units with reduced CO2 emissions and LED lighting.

toom Baumarkt DIY stores open first pop-up store in Cologne

Under the slogan of “Grüner wird’s nicht” (It won’t get any greener), toom opened for three months its first pop-up store “Stadtgrün by toom” (city green by toom) – right in time for the start of spring. Set up in the middle of downtown Cologne, the store picked up on the urban gardening trend and offered a wide range of products. Hobby gardeners could find everything they needed to create their green oases, ranging from organic products, plants and cacti to propagation material.

50th BILLA Click & Collect shop opens in Vienna

With additional Click & Collect shops, BILLA is making it much easier to shop online. Customers place their orders online and can then pick up the items, all packed and ready to go, at a scheduled time in the selected Click & Collect shop. Through this approach, BILLA is creating flexible shopping options to meet individual customer needs. The 50th Click & Collect shop opened in April at Praterstern square in Vienna.

PENNY customers earn points in Germany with PAYBACK

PENNY has become the first discounter in Germany to enable its customers to collect PAYBACK points for their purchases – at PENNY stores and on the online shop at penny.de. Customers can also use the PAYBACK app to collect PENNY points with their mobile phone, activate coupons and make mobile payments.

Group structure of the Travel and Tourism division successfully implemented

The Travel and Tourism division of REWE Group has introduced a part-group structure. The strategic project initiated in 2017 was successfully completed in April. Tourism-related activities have been brought together into their own holding company – DER Touristik Group GmbH. Company structures were adapted to the structure of business segments.

PENNY commits itself to HR policies adapted to life stages

PENNY has become the first discounter in Germany to be awarded the work-life balance certificate “audit berufundfamilie” (Work and Family Audit). In the process, PENNY has committed itself to further optimising the work-life balance of the 28,000 employees who work in its 2,180 stores, logistics operations or administrative offices.

PENNY updates regional structures in Germany

PENNY has updated its regional structure in Germany. In future, it will focus on five regions instead of eight, each with a similar size, structure and performance. PENNY has thus laid the foundation for further optimisation and additional synergies.

REWE and REWE.de launch Start-Up Award

REWE and REWE.de have become the first German company in the food retail sector to initiate their own start-up award. More than 170 young companies compete online between February and April with their food and beverage products. The event offers competitors in the final round a unique opportunity to showcase their innovations to top decision makers at REWE and a global brand producer as well as to an audience of professionals made up of purchasers, REWE retailers, journalists and bloggers.

BILLA Czech Republic with Stop & Shop at Shell petrol stations

Shell Czech Republic a.s. has opened the 64th petrol station with a BILLA Stop & Shop. The exceptional service, already running for four years, enables customers to purchase items round the clock from the high-quality product range of the BILLA brand. BILLA Stop & Shop gives lorry drivers and travellers a quick shopping opportunity.

BILLA Russia: New warehouse for dry foods

BILLA rented an additional 19,000 square metres for a warehouse for dry foods in spring. Cross-docking and the central warehouse moved into the new building in May.

New members of the Supervisory Board at REWE Group

During the Annual General Meeting and General Meeting held at the end of June 2018, REWE Group added new members to its Supervisory Board. Retailers Sven Schäfer, René Schneider and Christoph Steverding were elected to the Supervisory Boards of REWE Group as shareholder representatives. REWE retailer Erich Stockhausen was confirmed in his position as Chairman of the Supervisory Boards of REWE-ZENTRALFINANZ eG and REWE-ZENTRAL AG.

Collaboration in petrol station shop business under the new brand “BILLA Unterwegs”

ADEG AG, the company at REWE International AG that oversees the wholesale business, and Shell have set up a partnership under the new brand “BILLA Unterwegs” (Billa on the go) for the shop business of 47 Shell petrol stations throughout Austria.

DER Touristik Group establishes a new holiday destination agency in Croatia

DER Touristik Group is continuing to expand its network of holiday destination agencies. In the spring of 2018, DER Touristic Services (DTS) Croatia was established in the increasingly popular holiday destination country. The company’s offices in Pula, Split and Makarska opened during the summer. The group now has its own agencies in 25 destination regions. About 1,700 employees provide local assistance to guests and serve as contact partners for hoteliers and other service providers at destinations.

Hellweg and toom Baumarkt DIY stores resume partnership in the purchasing company DIY Union

Hellweg Die Profi-Baumärkte GmbH & Co. KG and toom Baumarkt GmbH renewed their partnership in the purchasing company DIY Union. Hellweg once again joined DIY Union as partner. Dominique Rotondi of toom and Frank Jahn of Hellweg serve as joint managing directors of DIY Union.

PENNY Shops in Hungary equipped with e-charging stations

PENNY has expanded its service offering for customers with e-charging stations at nearly 20 PENNY stores. In coming years, investment in electric mobility will be further increased and the charging network expanded.

REWE Group acquires majority stake in the Lithuanian supermarket chain IKI

On 1 August 2018, REWE Group acquired a majority stake in the Lithuanian supermarket chain IKI, a company in which it had previously invested as part of a joint venture.

ZooRoyal increases presence in REWE stores

Customers find the non-food products of the ZooRoyal brand in more than 1,500 REWE stores. In every store, animal lovers will find more than 50 products each for dogs and cats, including toys and accessories.

Management Board member Frank Wiemer leaves the company

As planned and announced in December 2016, Frank Wiemer left the Management Board of REWE Group on 30 September 2018 after serving for 10 years on the board.

REWE opens first Food Fulfilment Centre 2.0

The first technology-driven Food Fulfilment Centre 2.0 (FFC) went online, bringing the e-commerce activities of REWE digital to a new level. With the help of the technology, product availability can be increased further, new product lines added, delivery areas expanded, flexibility for customers improved and efficiency further boosted.

PENNY Romania: Partnership with chamber

The German-Romanian Chamber of Industry and Commerce has initiated, together with three companies, including PENNY Romania, a vocational training programme for young people. As part of this programme that combines academic and practical training, students gain extensive on-the-job retail experience and have the chance of a job offer from one of the three companies upon successfully completing the programme.

New DER cruise ship portal integrates sales channels

DER Reisebüro has launched a new information and booking portal, www.der-kreuzfahrten.com, combining online and offline worlds. Customers find all information online and can contact DER cruise ship experts at any time to receive individual assistance regarding the right selection of routes, cruise companies, cabin selection, travel to place of departure and excursions on land.

REWE Group continues to expand in 2018

This year, REWE Group is once again investing around 1.6 billion euros in the expansion and modernisation of its store network. About 1 billion euros of this amount is allocated to Germany. In its home market, REWE Group plans to open or expand around 300 REWE and PENNY stores. Outside Germany, more than 600 stores are being built, relocated or modernised. This makes REWE Group one of the fastest-growing players in the retail industry in Germany and Europe.

REWE moves forward with the integration of sky stores

Introduction of the REWE sales concept progresses at about 150 sky stores. The addition of more fresh foods and convenience in REWE’s product world, particularly for fruit and vegetables, as well as the introduction of REWE store brands have given a significant boost to sales. The transition was completed in just nine months.

toom Baumarkt DIY stores open a second pop-up store in MyZeil Center Frankfurt

For three months, toom welcomed renovation enthusiasts to its second pop-up store. Under the slogan of “Stadtbunt by toom” (city colour by toom), customers found trendy wall colours, practical tools and lots of inspiration for jobs related to painting and renovation.

ZooRoyal opens shop-in-shops at toom Baumarkt DIY stores

ZooRoyal, the online shop for pet needs, has further expanded its stationary presence by adding two shop-in-shops at toom Baumarkt DIY stores as part of a pilot project. On up to 100 square metres of space, toom customers will find a broad range of ZooRoyal products, including many exclusive ZooRoyal brands. Animal lovers can already find a selection of ZooRoyal products not only at toom, but also in many REWE stores.

DER Touristik UK launches new online travel specialists

The planning of long-haul trips is being revolutionised in the UK, through Meraki Travel. The newest addition to the more than 30 specialists in DER Touristik Group takes an exclusively digital approach. The centrepiece is a digital travel planner. The customer uses it to choose from available routes and then builds a bespoke holiday around it. He or she can see price information and an itinerary in real time.

DER Touristik UK acquires Latin America specialist

With Journey Latin America, DER Touristik UK has added an award-winning market leader for trips to Central and South America to its portfolio of specialist providers. From luxury trips and adventures off-the-beaten track to family holidays and private tours, Journey Latin America offers a diverse range of holiday experiences tailored to meet the widest variety of customer needs.

Management Board contracts of Lionel Souque and Sören Hartmann extended ahead of schedule

The Supervisory Board of REWE-ZENTRALFINANZ eG has extended the Management Board contracts of CEO Lionel Souque and Sören Hartmann, the head of Travel and Tourism, ahead of schedule. Lionel Souque’s new contract as CEO of REWE Group took effect on 1 January 2019 and has a five-year term. Sören Hartmann, who has headed Travel and Tourism at REWE Group since 1 July 2017, also received a new 3.5-year contract, effective 1 January 2019 and running through 30 June 2022.

REWE expands locations for pick-up service

More and more REWE stores are giving customers the option to pick up products that they ordered online. In December 2018, the number exceeded 200 locations for the first time. The roll-out will continue unabated in 2019.

REWE supplies all REWE To Go-Shops at Aral-owned petrol stations

All Aral-owned petrol stations have been integrated into the REWE supply system. By the end of 2018, customers could shop at 461 REWE To Go-Shops in Aral petrol stations.

BILLA opens new stores in Bulgaria

BILLA finished 2018 with six new stores, bolstering its position as the leading provider of stores in Bulgaria.

Modernisation of BILLA stores in Russia

BILLA Russia modernised 34 stores during 2018. Following the renovation, most of the redesigned stores had counters for fresh foods from the store’s own production, modern technical equipment and a new look.

New PENNY store concept in the Czech Republic

In the Czech Republic, a new, inspiring concept reminiscent of a market hall was completed at 120 of 380 stores. PENNY has the largest network of stores among its competitors. An additional 70 stores are scheduled to be renovated and five new locations will be opened in 2019.

PENNY Italy applies “Ambience 3.0” concept

In Italy, PENNY is introducing the refined concept “Ambience 3.0” at 60 stores and has opened 11 new stores. The concept puts a focus on fresh foods, bake-off and self-service gastronomy. Regionalism, origin and product quality are additional priorities.

Future Store concept at PENNY Romania

With the conversion of 236 stores over the past three years, the transition to the Future Store concept has been completed at PENNY Romania. Fifteen new stores were added in 2018. In addition to the store renovation, the range of store branded items produced in Romania is being continuously expanded.
